summer reading challenge - medal ceremony

Thank you to all the volunteers who have offered extra time, worked behind the scenes, done reviews or coped with the extra volume of visitors.  It is always a busy time of year, but also very rewarding.  There was certainly a lot of enthusiasm from the children taking part, and their parents.  It has been really helpful to have Tom, a teenager, helping with reviews.  He has done an excellent job.

A few statistics:

                 52 registered

                    1 dropped out

                    3 not started

                  42 completed

Most of the children attended Robert Arkenstall School, but we also had 11 from Wilburton School and a few from Sutton, Stretham, Mepal, 2 pre-schools and Witchford Village College.  5 children joined the library in order to take part.

Age groups – 50% age 4 – 7, 42% age 8 – 11, 8% older or younger registered.

A similar profile applied to completers.

The Medal Ceremony was held on 19 September at the Arkenstall Centre.  The decision to book the main hall was the right one, as the hall was filled with successful children and their families.  Stephen Thompson, Chair of the Parish Council, attended to show support for the library.  Every child received a medal, certificate and a book from our book sale stock. It was an enjoyable evening and  a great way to end to the Reading Challenge.

Thank you to the volunteers who helped on the night and with preparation.  Special thanks to Rosemary for supplying the medal ribbons again this year.

Book Club

Our friendly Book Club meets on the third Tuesday of the month in the Library at 3.30pm. We welcome anyone who enjoys reading and likes
talking about books. We don't do 'lit crit' but we discuss why we like/didn't like the book choice. We exchange tips on recent reads that we think others might enjoy, and then wander on to a wide range of subjects. You don't have to buy the books – we take turns to choose a book from a Cambridgeshire Libraries multi-copy list. If you are interested in joining us, send a request to Sally via info@haddenhamlibrarycambs.co.uk or give your contact details to a Library Volunteer.

Upcoming read:

Our next book is Nicola Upson's 1930s Cambridge-set 'Nine Lessons' which is the 7th in her series of mysteries featuring real-life crime writer Josephine Tey (1896–1952). All are welcome, and we will provide a copy of the book.  We will be meeting in the library to discuss it on Tuesday 17th March at 3.30pm.

To join us, speak to a Library volunteer, or drop a line to info@haddenhamlibrarycambs.co.uk.
