School visists 20 and 22 May 2025

This week the library hosted visits by children from Robert Arkenstall School.  On Tuesday we were pleased to see Comet and Moon classes, and on Thursday we welcomed Sun and Star classes.

Due to the lovely weather we have had recently, the theme of both visits was outdoor activities.  The children all enjoyed stories and made kites.  Their work is shown in the photos below.  The older children had lots to say about dragons, especially their ability to breathe fire, and there was an interesting discussion about whether the bird design could be a phoenix, the firebird.  The Reception class came up with some good names for dragons, eg. Firestorm.  Another child decided to add a long piece of string to his kite, and possibly fly it to the moon if the string was long enough.

The volunteers were kept busy helping with craft, reading and stamping Library/School visit cards.  Several children had reached their 5 visit target, and will be receiving their certificates in school assembly on Friday.

Some children had the chance to look at the kite festival page in our Celebrations book by Katy Halford.  See the page below – the children loved the dragon kite!

Book Club

Our friendly Book Club meets on the third Tuesday of the month in the Library at 3.30pm. We welcome anyone who enjoys reading and likes
talking about books. We don't do 'lit crit' but we discuss why we like/didn't like the book choice. We exchange tips on recent reads that we think others might enjoy, and then wander on to a wide range of subjects. You don't have to buy the books – we take turns to choose a book from a Cambridgeshire Libraries multi-copy list. If you are interested in joining us, send a request to Sally via info@haddenhamlibrarycambs.co.uk or give your contact details to a Library Volunteer.

Upcoming read:

Our next book is 'The Miniaturist' by Jessie Burton. Set in Amsterdam in 1686–87, it was inspired by Petronella Oortman's doll's house on display at the Rijksmuseum (pictured). We will be meeting in the library to discuss it on Tuesday 17th February at 3.30pm. Do let us know if you'd like to join us - we will provide a copy of the book.

To join us, speak to a Library volunteer, or drop a line to info@haddenhamlibrarycambs.co.uk.
