Book Club

Our friendly Book Club meets on the third Tuesday of the month in the Library at 3.30pm. We welcome anyone who enjoys reading and likes
talking about books. We don't do 'lit crit' but we discuss why we like/didn't like the book choice. We exchange tips on recent reads that we think others might enjoy, and then wander on to a wide range of subjects. You don't have to buy the books – we take turns to choose a book from a Cambridgeshire Libraries multi-copy list. If you are interested in joining us, send a request to Sally via info@haddenhamlibrarycambs.co.uk or give your contact details to a Library Volunteer.

Upcoming read:

Next month's book, also set in the 1930s, is the polar opposite of Hemingway's: 'Cold Comfort Farm' by Stella Gibbons, allegedly (according to its blurb) "probably the funniest book ever written". We'll be meeting on 19th May to discuss it. As always, everyone is welcome, and we can supply the book in advance.

To join us, speak to a Library volunteer, or drop a line to info@haddenhamlibrarycambs.co.uk.

A Man Called Ove by Frederik Backman

Our group were generally enthused by 'A Man called Ove'.
'I really enjoyed it...walloped it down and cried at the end'; 'I loved it. Backman's style of writing is warm and funny...the characters are all irresistible...all in all, a delight to read'; 'I laughed out loud, which is very rare for me'. We'd enjoyed the quirky characters, the mix of sadness and humour, the way the little community helped each other out and the kindness behind Ove's grumpy behaviour. The similarly grumpy cat seems to have struck a particular chord for several of us. Only one of us was disappointed by the book, finding the style 'very repetitive and wooden' and becoming irritated by 'longwinded analogies'. She thought that perhaps something had been 'lost in translation'. However, two of our group with close contacts in Denmark disagreed, saying that the style and the characters were 'very Swedish'.

So, 9 enthusiastic thumbs up and one very reluctant thumbs up.

The next book is Stacey Hall's 'The Familiars' on Tuesday 14 March
